
Hvar is town situated on the western side of the island with same name Hvar, in the Split - Dalmatia County. It is an ancient town with population of approximately 4,000 inhabitants.
The town history lasts already for the millennia, as result of numerous circumstances and advantages of Hvar. Nautical position of the Port of Hvar is certainly important. From the very beginnings of seafaring on sails, the island of Hvar was situated in the centre of sea routes in Adriatic. The port of Hvar, being protected by small islands and of naturally excellent shape, made a safe haven for boats, hiding from unsafe winds.
The town gained glory and power during middle ages being an important port within the Venetian, naval empire. The Venetian influence is evident in architecture of the town of Hvar. They add big influence to the charm of the town.
Today, the town of Hvar is town reach in cultural and historical heritage and one of the favorite tourist destinations in Dalmatia. The town offers massive, summer, and recreational tourism.
Hvar town is also popular among numerous young people from around the world.
What to see in Hvar town
The Cathedral of St. Stephen
The Hvar cathedral, which together with the Bishop's palace closes east side of the largest square in Dalmatia - Square of St. Stephen

It is not too common in the old cities of Croatian islands to have large square; the square is the center of all touristic activity.
The main square of town Hvar was originally surrounded by gardens. It was finished in 1780 by filling in the bay. The part close to St Stephen's Cathedral dates back to the 16th century. The square is nowadays surrounded by beautiful buildings with restaurants, shops and cafe bars.
Fort Fortica
It was built on a hill above the old part of Hvar town during the 16th century. From the fort you can enjoy the beautiful view of the town of Hvar and its surroundings, as well as the neighbor islands.
Hvar Theatre (and Arsenal)
It is one of the first municipal theatres in Europe, founded in 1612. Erected on the ancient Arsenal (a space used for repairing of galleons and storage of various seafaring tools). From outside Theatre is mostly preserved in its original form. The interior is from the 19th century.
Franciscan monastery
It was founded in 1461. Within the calm and silence of the monastery you can enjoy in monastery’s rich museum, among which the collection of old masters is exceptional.
Pakleni Archipelago
You can take day trip by boat or water taxi to the nearby Pakleni Islands, where secluded strands of white sand, hiking trails and pine groves await. The Pakleni Islands are one of the favorite nautical destinations on the Adriatic.
Beautiful Beaches near Hvar town
The beaches in Hvar town and Island are generally rocky - pebble, situated in bays and surrounded by pine forests. Some of beautiful beaches can be reached by car, bicycle, or inspiring walks through the Mediterranean landscape. "Dubovica" is a largest beach in the southern coast and 8km far from Hvar town, it can be reached by road or by bus and then you need to walk 5 minutes to get to it. The beach is made of white pebbles and there is a small restaurant on the beach. The nearest beautiful beach to Hvar town is "Milna”, 4km and can be seen from the road.
