Visiting Umag

Umag is situated not far from Italy and Slovenia borders, it is very good connected with roads in Croatia and Europe. The closest international airport is in Pula. Umag has one of the most prestigious ACI marinas situated in an attractive bay.

Umag Coat of ArmsUmag is situated as the westernmost town of Croatia on the Istria peninsula; it has population of approximately 13,000 inhabitants.

Umag is a tourist place. Natural beauty and geographical location were decisive for the development of tourism. Tourism development of town and surroundings is in direct connection with the development of agriculture. Fertile soil is especially suitable for the cultivation of olives and wine production, as traditional culture characteristic for the Mediterranean climate. Widely known and respected wine from Istria attracts more and more tourists to this region.

The town of Umag and surroundings was inhabited since Roman time, which is visible by the numerous archeological remains uncovered all along the coast. The history of Umag is closely linked to the settlement of Sipar whose ruins can be found north from the town.
After the Romans time Umag was administered through the various rulers and powers. It fell under the rule of the Byzantine Empire, and later under powerful Venetian Republic.
Venetian Republic, which has ruled for more than five centuries, used the Umag harbor for loading agricultural supplies from the hinterland and town economy was exclusively based on agriculture.
After the fall of Venetian Republic Umag share destiny with other towns in region, shortly under the rule of France until 1815 when it passed over to Austria until 1918; and then became part of Italy. Later after the Second World War became part of Croatia.

Until 1997 Umag had the status of municipality and by establishment of the new local rule it was awarded with the status of town.

Today, Umag is modern tourist resort enriched with new facilities every year. During the winter, it is a quiet place, and during the summer the town lives with its full life. The town is well known by cultural events and tennis tournament, ATP Croatia Open held since 1990.

What to see in Umag

Old town
It is situated on a peninsula, between two bays. It has inherited the urban structure of the middle Ages with numerous reminders of that era: picturesque narrow streets and squares, Venetian architecture houses and villas, wall remains. In the Old town you can find some very good restaurants with typical local dishes and excellent Istria wine.

Church of the Blessed Virgin Mary
The baroque parish church was built on the spot of an older church from 15th century. The bell tower is from the 15th century, and today's church was built in 1757.
Front of the church facade is "oddly”, the lower part is a carefully designed and the upper part is obviously unfinished. In 1930 the town committee tried to decide do finish church facade but agreement was never made and later blueprints of the church have been lost. However, they decided to demolish city palace destroyed by fire several years earlier, and now the church has a large and beautiful space in front. Venetian lion from the palace were saved and subsequently implement in the bell tower. Interior of the church holds very valuable inventory, pictures, altars and sculptures.

Town Museum
It is situated in the old part of town, it hold collection of archaeological finds from the town and surroundings. The museum also promoting numerous outstanding national and international exhibitions

Riva
Promenade area best known as the Riva, place to walk around and enjoy, it winds from the old city core and leads alongside the coast.

Lighthouse in Savudrija
Savudrija is a small settlement and popular tourist resort near Umag, there is the largest and oldest lighthouse in this area built in 1818.

Sipar Promontory
It is situated between Umag and Savudrija and when low tides are a small promontory and remains of the ancient Castle rise from the sea. It was the town Sipar from Roman times later destroyed by pirates.
